I've been a New Yorker for over 30 years, though I grew up in what once was literally the nuts & bolts capital of the world, Rockford, IL. In my blue collar household creativity and expression were not highly valued. There was occasional creative encouragement but hard work, perseverance, quiet humility, and living to work, were the most prized virtues.
The recession era of the 1970's, and a father who manufactured packaging machinery meant moving out of the Midwest Rust Belt to the West Coast of Florida. After landing in Sarasota my love of photography surfaced and my first photos were published in H.S. and college newspapers, and a local arts magazine. Sarasota's legacy of being the winter home of post-war modernist artists, most notably Syd Solomon and John Chamberlain, fostered my imagination and creativity. To earn spending money as a teen I mowed Syd Soloman's lawn.
My hard working parents encouraged attending college but studying photography, journalism, or art was off the table. I leveraged business studies into a 31 year career on the business side of The New York Times. Since leaving the news business I've earned a living being employed at large podcast networks.
I've worked in oil and acrylics for 25 years and have been writing comics/graphic short stories for over 10 years. Several of my paintings are in private collections and my short story comics collaborations have been accepted for publication in several anthologies. My auto-biographical comic, Wait...It Gets Worse, co-created with Eisner award winner, and Mad Magazine artist Gideon Kendall, has six self-published issues since 2014.
